Corrie Stalwart - Mavis Wilton

Mavis was brought into the serial in 1971 as an old friend of Emily Nugent’s. She later appeared as her bridesmaid at her wedding to Ernest Bishop. In 1973, she became a regular when she was hired by Rita Littlewood to be her assistant at the newly opened newsagents called the Kabin. This would be the beginning of a 24 year partnership that would provide comedy for the soap opera. As soon as she was behind the Kabin counter, Mavis caught the eye of Jerry Booth. They began a relationship which was more off than on. Sadly, Jerry died before the flame had really ignited. Jerry was barely in his grave before Mavis was wooed by another man, Derek Wilton. For the next 11 years, Derek would pop in and out of her life. In 1983, it was the Ken/Deirdre/Mike love triangle that grabbed the headlines, but poor Mavis was also involved in one. Two men wished to marry her: Derek and Victor Pendlebury. She chose Derek but she also jilted him, and he jilted her! Four years passed before they actually got married. Sadly, their marriage came to an end in 1997 when Derek died of a heart attack. After his funeral, Mavis decided to move to the Lake District and although Rita was tempted to join her, Mavis left alone and bid farewell to the Kabin, her friends and her home of 24 years.
